The Current Hair Academy Frequently Asked Questions:
Are you a Full-time
Accredited Program?
No, we are not a full-time accredited institution. Instead, we offer two comprehensive 150-hour training programs that provide a flexible, skill-building approach to entering the hairstyling industry. Our programs are designed to give you a strong foundation in cutting, colouring, and salon professionalism, without the financial or time commitment of a traditional full-time school.
CAn I receive Government funding for your programs?
Since we are not a full-time accredited institution, our programs are not eligible for most government student loans or grants. However, some students have successfully used RESP funds or secured private loans, depending on their individual bank or financial institution. We recommend checking with your bank or funding provider directly to explore your options.
When can I take my Level 1 Skills Trade BC Exam?
Once you’ve completed both of our 150-hour programs (for a total of 300 training hours), you’ll be eligible to register for your Level 1 Certification Exam through SkilledTradesBC. Most of our graduates who’ve gone on to write the exam have passed successfully.
after passing my level 1 exam, what are my next steps?
After completing your Level 1 Certification, you have two main pathways to continue your hairstyling journey with SkilledTradesBC:
Option 1:
You can pursue your Level 2 Certification by completing: 3,150 work experience hours, and an additional 150 hours of technical training at an accredited institution (such as Vancouver Community College).
Option 2 (Most Common):
You can bypass Level 2 and go straight to your Red Seal Exam after accumulating a total of 4,725 work experience hours.
Both options are valid, choose the one that aligns best with your goals, timeline, and access to further education.
We offer flexible, part-time training designed to build a strong foundation in cutting, colouring, and salon professionalism. Unlike full-time accredited schools, our program allows students to start working in salons earlier while continuing to gain hours and experience on the job.
What’s the difference between your program and a traditional hair school?
We strongly recommend completing both programs to gain a well-rounded foundation in both cutting and colouring, and to reach the 300 hours needed to write your Level 1 exam through SkilledTradesBC. However, some students may have previous hair stylist experience and are looking for a refresher in either hair cutting or colouring and may opt to take one program only.
Do I need to complete both 150-hour programs?
Yes! Many of our graduates work as apprentices or junior stylists in local salons while continuing to build hours toward SkillsTradesBC Red Seal certification.
Will I be able to work in a salon after finishing the programs?
Red Seal Certification for a hairstylist in Canada is the highest nationally recognized trade credential. It means the hairstylist can work anywhere in Canada without having to re-certify in that province.
